Summer fun often means more time outdoors, making hydration and sun safety especially important for children.

Children can become dehydrated quickly in hot weather. Offer water often throughout the day, especially during outdoor play, and encourage regular water breaks even if children do not say they are thirsty. Fruits with high water content, like watermelon and oranges, can also help keep children hydrated.

Protect children from sunburn by applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before going outside and reapplying every two hours or after swimming. Hats, lightweight clothing, sunglasses, and shaded play areas can also help reduce sun exposure.

Watch for signs of overheating such as fatigue, dizziness, headache, or nausea. Taking breaks indoors or in the shade can help children stay safe while enjoying summer activities.

A few simple precautions can help families enjoy a healthy and safe summer season.
